Willow Wicker Craft , also called as Keani Keam, is a handicraft of Kashmir. The products are made by weaving using willow reeds. Willow weaving is an indigenous business of the valley. Some commonly crafted items are baskets, flower vases, room dividers, lamp shades, trays, chairs, swings etc. After treatment of the willow no insect or fungus attack happens, so it is also used to make fruit, chapati baskets. It is a strong, durable material of Copper colour, so no finishing of the products is required.
Pankaj Narain (Founder of The Beehive India) alongwith Mr Jonak Das, researched and documented this material (There was no documentation available prior to this).
We did a series of lamps, kitchenware & furniture. Designing new products takes a long time here, because this craft is a side activity for the artisans.
