Channapatna city manufactures one of India’s oldest crafts : lacquered wooden toys. It is a craft cluster located near Mysore. As per history, Channapatna Craft was founded in 18th century during the rule of Tipu Sultan. Channapatna products are made from a wood called Aale mara (ivory wood), and hand-turned & painted on a lathe machine using natural vegetable dyes. In the last decade, to keep up with the market demands, Channapatna artisans have diversified their product range from just toys to home decor items, corporate gifting items etc.
The Beehive has made several visits to Channapatna and has been in constant touch with the artisans. We have explored using natural lacquer on woods other than Aale mara ( locally available). We even used lacquer on Bamboo and it turned out very well. However, We are yet to find an economical logistical solution to providing the other woods to the artisans, to develop new range of products.
We have developed a range of Tealights in multiple colours using natural lacquer. And we are working on designing & producing more unique products.
